Tatami and Japanese culture are closely entwined. Tatami flooring is synonymous with traditional Japanese houses. Wanting to bring this unique aesthetic into our own home, without having to install an entire tatami room, we went on a journey to find beautiful, handmade goza mats. 

These Japanese goza mats are woven from the highest quality Japanese igusa rush grass and are finished with a matcha trim. Soft underfoot and naturally breathable, they keep cool in summer, and carry the gentle, calming aroma of a Japanese tatami room. Each goza mat is lightweight and easy to roll away when not in use. They make wonderful rugs for a Japanese aesthetic, or can be used as stretching and meditation mats. 

Each double-sized goza mat is approximately 180cm x 180cm.
Freshly made mats have a soft green tone before fading to the more traditional straw yellow colour over time.

For 80 years, Daikou has been contributing to the tatami industry in Japan. Comitted to using the highest quality Japanese igusa, Daikou specialise in fitting Japanese homes with traditional and modern tatami flooring.

While travelling in Fukuoka Prefecture, we were lucky enough to visit the Daikou factory and meet with their artisan tatami craftsman and receive a crash course in making tatami mats by hand.

Daikou has designed and made these custom goza mats for us and our Australian community.
