KAMAWANU
“Revisit the old to create a new way of playfulness"
Tenugui is a traditional craft that accompanies your daily life. Their use dates back to the Heian period (794-1185) or earlier. KAMAWANU’s beautiful designs breathe new life into the functional tenugui. Each item is made through the remarkable fusion of Japanese culture and craftsmanship. KAMAWANU artisans carefully hand-dye each tenugui using a technique which was established in Japan over 100 years ago. Each item is unique, with subtle differences, an aesthetic reflective of Japanese culture.
Tenugui have endless uses. You can use them as washcloths, small scarves, as table runners, placemats or napkins, as art or decorative or functional wrapping, and for cleaning. An appeal of tenugui is that the more you wash them, the softer they become.
The beauty of tenugui is found in its versatility, adaptability, and the well wishes passed on from one person to the next.
We've handpicked our favourite tenugui designs and a few furoshiki patterns to accompany our collection.
