Silica sand is a type of sand that is produced when refining ceramic clay. It is generally mixed with mortar or concrete and widely used on construction sites. Doi and Nagaya sought to discover new value in this material and created these ingenious incense holder stones.
Inspired by the incense burners found at Buddhist altars, incense sticks are inserted directly into the silica sand stones, allowing the stick to burn and drop its ash onto the stones. With one quick shake of the jar, the ash falls to the bottom, creating an effortless cleanup between sticks.
Each set of silica sand stones comes in a glass KINTO dish, ready for immediate use.

“We are not a solo artist nor a big manufacturer. We have created a third way to make ceramics.”
Looking to combine the collaboration and support of larger kilns with the creative freedom of being solo artists, Doi and Nagaya created 3rd Ceramics. Through their partnership, they strive to create simple products that make people’s lives just a little richer.
Meeting Doi and Nagaya gave a wonderful feeling of familiarity. Their passion for exchanging views and sharing art with others immediately resonated with the OKAERI’s vision.
After a tour of their studio workshop, it was clear their beautiful works were a fantastic fit.
