When precious items travel vast distances, there is an inherent risk of breakages. As a sign of respect to the makers who have poured their hearts into each piece of work, we strive to repair every piece that arrives broken.

Using traditional kintsugi methods, this teacup has been given new life. Under the guidance of master kintsugi artist, Jun Moorooka, this cup was repaired in Australia. All raw ingredients, including the urushi lacquer and genuine gold powder, were made in Japan.

The materials used to repair this teacup are food safe.

Kintsugi is a unique reflection of our own brokenness and the transformation into beauty that is possible for each of us.

Origin

This cup was originally handcrafted in Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture

Senryuzan Kiln

This cup was originally crafted by the Senryuzan Kiln.

Senryuzan Kiln was founded just before the end of the Edo period in 1826. Since then, it has honoured the traditional spirit and culture of Hagi yaki. Now, led by Akira Yoshiga, Senryuzan Kiln continues to practice traditional methods of the craft. On our most recent visit to Hagi, we joined Yoshiga-san for a tour through their studios and museum. The small team of artists make their own clays and glazes using traditional techniques and continue to carefully craft each piece on kick wheels. Each of these traditional practices are symbolic of Senryuzan Kiln's approach to Hagi yaki.

For nearly 200 years, Senryuzan Kiln has been a custodian of traditional Japanese ceramic craft. The small collective of artists honours the traditional spirit and cultures of Hagi yaki.

Each Senryuzan Kiln vessel is crafted using traditional Hagi yaki clays, techniques and ash glazes before being wood fired in their climbing kiln.

Every piece represents their traditional approach to Hagi yaki.
